Indeed. But you know, I didn't think Clinton had such a magnetic personality. I didn't think he was exceptional in any way, except as a liar. Adams, Madison, Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln - they were exceptional. I think Clinton appealed to the scoundrel in Americans, a kind of "Hey, we all are pretty scummy, right?" appeal. And I think Americans largely answered him in the affirmative.

It seems to me there was a time when to acquire the right of leadership a would-be leader had to prove he had more integrity than the lowest American. That is perhaps why leaders did not dare display their foibles too boldly if at all. But dang. Today we got Barney Frank in the dang Congress. All good things must come to an end.
