I have talked to several women who have stated emphatically that they would never want an artificial diamond

they may THINK they have a real diamond, but how will they know? the jeweler may not even know.

And they are preparing for this with brand named diamonds

De Beers has had a huge ad budget for years but still who the hell buys a "De Beers" diamond? people buy carats and color and quality. if synthetics are equivalent in all these departments, and can fool any jeweler's loupe, as well as more sophisticated equipment, how hard will it be to fool the missus? what are they going to do, etch a big "D" onto the rock?

the Wired article had several comments regarding the lack of brand appeal in diamonds. e.g., a jeweler is quoted:

"De Beers?" he says. "Nobody cares if it's from De Beers. My clients just want a nice diamond."
