GM is choking on benefits for its retirees. The automaker has three retirees for each active worker. By itself, GM provides health insurance coverage to half a percent of the U.S. population when workers' dependents are counted.

Because of the 1999 agreement Ford made with the UAW not to close any assembly plants, the automaker will be forced to make 400,000 Ford Tauruses and Mercury Sables this year at two factories, twice what it needs. More than half the cars will go to rental and corporate fleets, each one built at a loss.
