I agree. This past year was a wake-up call to EU member states. They must have noticed the US move outside of the definition of the superpower internationally accepted as "legitimate" - i.e. benign, non-aggressive, multilateral, leading by example rather than brute power.

EU has a long way to go before they are integrated into an efficient entity, a serious global power with a single voice and identity. However, it is refreshing to see them take steps in that direction in the past year or so. They have already started to integrate the respective militaries of the member states, for example.

EU will have to get their act together and act as a balancing power to US unilateralism. They don't even have to be as strong as the US. The fact that the US needs the EU as a partner in the East vs West armageddon they are conjuring up is quite an important leverage for the EU.
