The cold war was alive and well then. It was a different time, with differing motivations than today. While the U.S. supported Saddam in the 80s it also, covertly supported Iraq (recall Ollie North and Iran/Contra). I don't know, perhaps if Iran had overrun Iraq that would have been a good thing. The impulse to support Iraq in the 80s made sense in a weird way. In a perfect world, sure soveriengty should be respected, but history has screwed up the middle east to such a degree, I don't think it can always be left to its own devices. Kurds are happy. Would it be better if there were no kurds. The place is a mess, people can either do something or nothing ie sanctions. Don't you think Iran's response to the student demonstrations recently would have been extremely bloody, but wasn't because of the U.S. presence next door. Just to be clear, I'm no fan of GWB.
