Why, after all these years, can't the US manufacturers build a Camry/Accord/Maxima like car in terms of quality?

Short answer. Japanese car companies are run by engineers. American car companies are run by finance/legal/marketing types.

When the clean air standards were imposed 30 years ago, GM hired 2,000 lawyers and lobbyists to fight the regulations.

Honda hired 2,000 engineers to solve the problem.
