Was watching the Discovery Channel last night. Something about finding the shipwreck of the Otocha (SP?), circa 1650, or so. Point is, when tonnes of silver bars were lifted off the ocean floor, the old wooden planks of the ships hold were found underneath. The silver prevented the wasting away of that wood when all else was long gone. FWIW
