While there is value in sometimes letting kids work things out among themselves, what Chris proposes is an example of allowing behaviors that can be very destructive. Kids aren't discerning enough to know when group behavior turns cruel, what, if any, is the difference between calling someone Cheater and grouping together to chant Fatty, Four Eyes, Metal Mouth, Retard. We have seen the results of gang behavior on SI.
