I was just writing to CH that I have no problem with ceremonial prayer, or the use of religious music in school programs, or a lot of things that upset some liberals. I think it's the agenda of this man that concerns me. His actions are not the actions of someone I want sitting in a seat of power. His declaring himself "the Supreme Authority of the state", saying that it's all right for the monument to be there becuase "I want it", his sneaking it in in the dead of night...all smack of someone who is not terribly well-balanced, someone whose own religious beliefs could easily influence his judicial actions.
I have no idea how often the Ten Commandments were posted in courthouses, and for me, that isn't the issue. There were separate water fountains for blacks and whites, too. In no way am I saying this is unprecedented, merely that this man has a very specific agenda, he is a Southern Baptist fundamentalist with a serious ego problem, and the court has declared him in violation and he is disobeying the courts.
If I were going to promote the display of the Ten Commandments, I sure wouldn't pick this guy as my role model. |
