Are you familiar with Arthur Ransome? If not, run, do not walk, to the nearest bookstore to get a copy of Swallows and Amazons. Start reading it to your kids and they will fall into the magic. My daughters have read all the books at least five times each, I have probably read them a dozen times each since the first time I ran across them about age 8 or 9 or so. Wonderful, wonderful books for children. Try to do the first few in order -- Swallows and Amazons, then Swallowdale, then Winter Holiday. From there on it's not so important. You can get them new in paperback, amazon.com, but if you're like me you'll want to get the Jonathan Cape series in hardbound. We have three full sets now, and I'm working on several more sets for when the grandchildren start coming.
