Circuit density is circuit density defined by gate length and width. You can put all that stuff on to a round or a square. I know if you ask some one at ASML what shape their optimum definition of their latest exposure too is, somehow I do not think is will be a square. The exposure area will be shuttered off into a rectangle, but now your are wasting very expensive exposure tool capacity.

Minimum geometry size defines circuit density as I see it.

/edit. Now lemme see if they put square lenses into these things -g-
