By BLOOMBERG NEWS

pplications for mortgages fell for a second consecutive week to the lowest in more than a year as rising mortgage rates drove down refinancing, an industry report showed.

The refinancing index fell 14.9 percent to 2,756.8, also the lowest since July 2002, and is down 72 percent from the record high of 9,977.8 reached in the last week of May.

The refinancing index has fallen for seven consecutive weeks.

The mortgage group's purchase index slipped 4.9 percent, to 389.5 from 409.6. The record of 460.5 was set in the final week of May. The index averaged 388.9 this year before last week's figures.
