You succomb to the falacy of the excluded middle.

The U.S. has a range of options between sitting on their hands, and unilateral invasion of countries. I am hard pressed to think of a single example in the type of asymetrical tactics that have developed in the last 50 years where the traditional military might has won (Tibet maybe?). The empires have fallen.
