MADE IN THE USA: WORLD'S HIGHEST INCARCERATION RATE

More than 5.6 million Americans are or have served time in state or federal prison, creating the largest prison system in the world, according to a report recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The first-of-its-kind report highlights some shocking criminal justice trends: about 1 in 37 of all U.S. adults have or are currently doing time; more than 4 million prisoners or former prisoners are denied a right to vote; incarceration rates for women have increased at nearly double the rate for men since 1980; and nearly 1 in 4 inmates in prison are there for drug-related offenses, the majority of which are nonviolent.

These extraordinary numbers suggest a frightening future for the U.S. The nation hit an all time high of 2.2 million inmates this year and the report estimates that if this trend continues the number of Americans in prison or with prison experience is expected to jump to a whopping 7.7 million (3.4 percent of all adults) by 2010. A black male would have about a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison during his lifetime, Hispanic males 1 in 6 and white males 1 in 17.

The report comes after many years of get-tough policies. Not only are offenders incarcerated for lengthy periods of time, their rights are restricted after release. These include banning former inmates from receiving public assistance, living in public housing, receiving financial aid for college, and voting. With a prison system spiraling out of control with non-violent drug offenders, it is obvious that the war on drug is not working.
