the wish to hide religious expression away...is very different from protesting excessive entanglement........

Yes, that's so. There are a lot of different threads running through this issue. Those are two of them and they are different. Some opponents subscribe to one or the other and some to both.

There is another difference that is important to keep in mind when looking at these various threads and what is being advocated and that is enforcement. The author does not make clear how or even if his naked public square would be enforced. I would certainly oppose any attempts to enforce it through the legal system short of excessive entanglement, that is. And I understand how his point might look like religious expression is embarrassing and how that might be hurtful, but I didn't see him saying that. All I saw was a recognition that effusive and conspicuous display of religious differences in the public square can be divisive, like, duh, and perhaps a suggestion that some moderation and self-restraint and consideration might be smart. I can only agree with that.

You and I agree, I think, that some accommodation should be made by both majority and minority when these issues arise. We agree that the majority cannot illegally impose itself on the minority and that squeaky wheels cannot be allowed to rule. We will always disagree, though, I fear, on where the fulcrum is. Your default is that the majority rules and my default is that the power of the majority brings a civic obligation to be magnanimous to the extent that it reasonably can.
