For starters, we're not talking centuries ago; we're talking about a few decades- -this started with De Gaulle in the 1960's. There are a great many Frenchmen still alive who were living then.

French Living Today Built No Colonial Empire. It Was Their Ancestors.
French living today fought to keep that empire. The Algerian War of Independence ended in 1962. And France lost. Again.

(And, in fact, small parts of that empire still exist. Look up Grench Guyana, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. These, fortunately for France, are small and helpless enough that even the French can hold onto them.)

They do have a problem, yes. They are a pipsqueak people living in a pipsqueak nation of no importance. Other than that minor fact, they'd do it.

Portuguese and the Spanish colonized half the world.
Spain and Portugal were not pissed that they did not emerge from WW2 as dominant world powers. France was. Although how they could expect that after being run over by the Germans in 6 weeks and then having to wait for the Americans, Canadians, and British to liberate them is beyond me.

But haughtiness is one of their more lasting traits. If you have no real claim to fame, claim you have "culture". Everybody has some. You can grow it in Petri dishes if necessary.
