We did not start out with indiscriminate bombing raids, we attempted to hit military targets while limiting collateral damage. The British did pursue area bombing, that is, the bombing of population centers, after their experience with the Blitz. Eventually, in our eagerness to curtail further war with brutal enemies, we began area bombing too. By 1945, in the Pacific theater, this was partially rationalized by the relative lack of success of precision bombing in the fickle Japanese weather. However, that was belied by the use of incendiary bombs, guaranteed to burn dense Japanese cities to the ground, considering their use of wood and paper.........
