then you are misinformed. Cien has 72 customers. SBC just deployed WaveSmith's {Cien} Multiservice switch that migrates frame-relay/atm traffic onto its optical network. This is fairly substantial. Cien is comfortable with it's
GIBE option. Secondly, they have 2 un announced customers which will drive revenue in 2004. Online product is 41% of revenue. As DSL poliferates there will be more traffic at the edge. Remember that traffic is sticky at the edge {i.e. more equipment needed as compared to long-haul {twice}} and growth will be dramatic at the edge. To penetrate the RBOC's WaveSmith's Multiservice switch provides the tool to migrate traffic onto an optical backbone. What else do we need. The traffic usage on core routes in the USA is at 65% utilization. 70% is the
tipping point when RBOC's etc have to light dark fibre...

RBOC's are traditionally slow, but this time it is the battle for survival against cable. If they do not upgrade to FTTH or FTTP then the will die a slow death. IP telephony offered by cable will further erode voice revenuces. So, if the RBOC's are not into data very soon and agressively then the cable vendors will own the last mile... Regards, Immi
