In a war that makes no sense, targeting Sergio Vieira de Mello, the U.N. mission leader in Iraq, is like targeting Mother Theresa. A man of great humanity, he was in Iraq to help save the situation into which Bush has placed our nation. To the bombers, however, he was just one more faceless symbol of foreign occupation.

Sergio Vieira de Mello was the most prominent UN official involved in the liberation of East Timor. East Timor has been on Osama bin Laden's grievance list for a long time, well before he ever mentioned the Palestinians, in fact. How come we never hear anybody on the Left mention this obvious "root cause"?

So, not understanding the cause, we get the ole "desperation" word again. Would somebody tell me why so many people want to hard to discover that the terrorists are acting reasonably, they have no other choice, they're "desperate"? I think it is the Left who is desperate to discover the trick to assuage the suicide bombers' grievances. This motive is certainly understandable but not when the attempt keeps being pushed forward in the face of all available evidence.
