Here is an interesting set of numbers via the Inquirer:
(originally from iSuppli)

AMD loses market share in China

Intel stays on top, Nvidia ATI soar

theinquirer.net

A SURVEY BY market research firm iSuppli said that AMD lost market share in China, while both Intel and Nvidia gained ground in what all three see as a lucrative future marketplace.

According to the figures, Intel stayed number one in China in 2002, Nvidia moved from number four in 2001 to number two, while AMD fell from number eight in 2001 to number 12 in the following year.

ATI improved its position from 46th to 27th in 2002, while Via fell from ninth to 22nd, according to iSuppli.

Analyst Byron Wu at iSuppli said in his report: "Semiconductor sales in China are rising at a blistering pace surpassing the growth rates of other major regions by wide margins". He said that in 2002 chip revenues grew by 40.8 per cent to $20.1 billion in value.

But home grown Chinese semiconductors have yet to make an impact in the top 30 rankings said Wu. But Shanhai Beijing and Hangzhou Silan, Jinlin Sino Microelectronics and Wuxi China are in the top 100. µ

And here is an attempt to post the table(did not copy/paste):
theinquirer.net

Note that the comparison is 2002 versus 2001.
Interestingly some European chipmakers (which traditionally have had more of a presence in China than US manufacturers) are pretty high on the list, higher than Samsung:

nr3 STMicro
nr4 Philips semiconductors

The China growth may mean some shifting of the balance between the semi makers. Infineon also very active in China.

Any thoughts?

All the best
