NORWALK, Conn. Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Electronic Retailing Systems
International, Inc. ("ERS") (Nasdaq: ERSI) today announced the first
installation agreement, under the ERS/Twin County pay-per-use program,
with Norkus Enterprises Inc., a member of Twin County Grocers, Inc.

Twin County Grocers, Inc, is one of the largest grocery co-operative
wholesalers in the Northeast. Twin County is comprised of 66
member-owned Foodtown stores and 69 non-Foodtown member stores. Norkus
Enterprises, Inc. currently owns and operates four Super Foodtown
stores, and plans to open its fifth Super Foodtown store during the
first quarter of 1998.

Gerry Norkus, President of Norkus Enterprises, noted, "ERS has
impressed us with their dedication to, and investment in, the
electronic shelf label industry. We have been monitoring this
technology since 1990. ERS now brings a new and exciting third
generation hardware and software product to the marketplace. Based on
our experiences to date, we believe ERS will continue to provide Norkus
Enterprises with the appropriate technology and store applications
necessary to assist our company as we move forward into a new century."

"We are pleased that Norkus is the first of the Twin County Group to go
forward with the ERS/Twin County pay-per-use program. Hopefully, this
will be the first of a chain-wide rollout of our new generation,
wireless, spread spectrum electronic shelf label systems in their
stores," said Bruce Failing, Jr. ERS' chief executive officer.

ERS is a leading developer and supplier of electronic shelf labeling
systems designed to improve retailer productivity. The ERS
ShelfNet(TM) system is designed to assist retailers to save costs and
increase accuracy in pricing by linking a store's central computer both
to its check-out scanner and to the ERS electronic liquid crystal
display shelf labels at the shelf edge. The ERS system allows for
pricing information to be automatically changed on the electronic shelf
labels when prices in the point-of-sale scanner are changed. This
system eliminates the need for paper price tags, which require
labor-intensive servicing and do not provide the level of pricing
accuracy provided by electronic shelf label systems. ERS' system also
includes patented software applications supporting management systems
and practices which are intended to provide specific benefits to
retailers in merchandising, space management and inventory management
through the ability to communicate specific product information to and
from store personnel working in the aisle of the retail stores.
