No laptop experience here, but I'll just put in my 2c on backups:

I like hard drives because they're fast and easy, especially if you have lots of Megabytes to backup. If it's a small amount of files CDRW is good—the drives and media are super cheap (700MB per $1 disc) and reasonably fast. The DVD drives are coming down in price and you can put 5GB on a 2 or 3 dollar disc. Make sure you get the good software, though—I think Nero is the good one (I've had problems with Roxio).
