I suppose the next thing you're going to do is to blame Ronald Reagan for the crap in Lebanon.

No.. I blame Reagan for choosing sides, namely the Phalangist Maronites... Once we chose sides, US forces became legitimate targets for Shiites and Druze.

The Iraelis learned this, much to their dismay...

And it's pretty much the same lesson we need to learn from in dealing in Iraq.. Don't choose sides, except against those of the people as a whole.. Even the Sunnis and Wahhabists.

And it means working with tribal elders and clerics, holding them responsible for the actions of members of their clans, in exchange for our respecting their positions of traditional authority.

No, I do care.

I remain unconvinced. Your attitude seems to indicate that we should permit a complete power vacuum to develop within Iraq, leaving 23 million Iraqs doomed to wage civil war against one another, torn apart by the various neighboring regimes who don't one faction or another from seizing control (or competing in the global oil market).

But the US can't calm the situation down.

I don't buy this.. But it requires us to remain neutral, seeking only to reconstruct Iraq and leave control to a legitimate Iraqi government.. And it will likely require the US to maintain forces in country to permit this government to consolidate its legitimacy and trust among all the tribal elements within the country.

Truly not an easy task.. but I'm not prepared to let a few terrorists defeat our national will...
