MIMO is one of the technologies that are included in the framework of 802.16a/.16e and is being considered for use in 802.20 and TD-SCDMA standards. Airgo's effort is an extension to the 802.11 standard and has to work within a more restricted framework - fewer channels, much courser granularity and without TDD. But it probably works to increase range and available bandwidth and reduce interference so the market will probably use the chips . . at least for some corporate class devices. I doubt it will gain huge market share.

It's interesting that their first products is targeted at 802.11a. That market has not taken off as many had expected despite the larger number of available channels and less interference at the 5 GHz spectrum. Range has been a significant limitation for 802.11a; perhaps Airgo's MIMO enhancement is just what is needed to get 802.11 to take off. I think they are right - the corporate market will find a higher range, higher capacity 5HGhz WLAN very attractive. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds over the next six-9 months.
