It's relatively simple to see that federations such as the USA work a lot better than competing, warring states, with no mechanisms other than war to resolve contentious issues and common property ownership. The USA has grown over the centuries. Most Americans seem to be quite happy with such a federation

3 points in answer:

1) The States of the United States started out with a common base of law and custom, i.e., English common law,

2) The United States didn't work as a federation, so the Articles of Confederation were superceded by The Constitution,

3) The United States is now a Union, with a rather strong Federal Government, rather far removed from a pure federation.
