Georgia-Pacific says that hand dryers in bathrooms increase bacteria on the hands, but then, they sell paper towels. gp.com
The secretaries at my office are very observant of other people's bathroom habits, and put up little signs with helpful tips about, for example, how long to wash the hands to kill germs (long enough to sing one verse of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star -- I always forget and sing one verse of Jingle Bells, which takes about the same length of time). Men are not allowed to use the women's loo, not even the owner of the building.
It's a shame to spend all that time and soap washing away germs only to pick up more from the door handle because someone did not wash their hands.
My suggestion is to carry a kit containing disposable gloves and a roll of plastic wrap, as well as alcohol based hand cleaner, sanitary wipes, and paper towels. Don gloves, drape toilet seat in plastic wrap, do business, sanitize person, stand up and dress self, remove plastic wrap, flush toilet, exit stall, dispose plastic products, clean hands using alcohol based hand cleaner, and exit bathroom using paper towels to protect hands while opening and closing door.
Another alternative is to only use bathrooms in upscale places. Is there a special toilet in the first class section of airplanes? I've never flown first class, but maybe it would be worth it if one did not have to sit on the same toilet as ordinary people with their ordinary germs. |
