Californian Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante has a wide lead over actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the race to succeed Governor Gray Davis according to a new poll.

Mr. Bustamante, a Democrat, attracted 35 percent of 801 likely voters surveyed by the Los Angeles Times, while Mr. Schwarzenegger, a Republican, took 22 percent. Previous polls had shown leading candidates Mr. Bustamante and Mr. Schwarzenegger within five percentage points of each other.

Mr. Bustamante is the sole Democrat in the race to replace Mr. Davis provided he is ousted by an October 7 recall vote. The poll found that 50 percent of likely voters favored recalling Mr. Davis while 45 percent were opposed.

The new poll was released after Republican businessman Bill Simon withdrew from the race saying there were too many candidates from his party in the running.

Leading state Republicans have urged some of the candidates to drop out. There are more than 130 candidates from both parties trying to replace Mr. Davis, a Democrat, in the October ballot.

The Los Angeles Times poll interviewed 1,351 registered voters between August 16 and 21, identifying 801 of them as likely to cast a ballot in the recall election. The poll's margin of error was plus or minus three percent.
