Mr. Hobsbawm wrote his book, he writes, not for "agreement, approval or sympathy" but for "historical understanding," as a way to explain himself and his thinking.

This was also a "headshaker" for me when I read it in the Times. What a life. He has to look back now and realize that everything he believed in and fought for was wrong.

I am reading a terrific autobiography right now by Richard Helms, "A Look over my Shoulder." Euro and Eastern Establishment education in the '30s. A "light lunch" with Hitler in '37 as a Journalist for UPI. Navy in the war, then to Donovan in the OSS, and stayed in all the way to Director of the CIA. What a life!

He covers the CIA "Iran" involvement, and was running "Covert" for a lot of the "Biggies" of the cold war. I will comment more later.
