Misguided policies put troops in peril

sunspot.net

"Bring it on," President Bush recently said to terrorists, with the smug grin we're accustomed to. On Tuesday they did just that in Baghdad and Jerusalem ("Truck bombing kills 20 at U.N. post in Baghdad" and "At least 18 die as blast tears Jerusalem bus," Aug. 20).

The people who commit these acts are despicable and must be dealt with accordingly. At the same time, the American people must realize that it is Mr. Bush and his misguided administration that put American soldiers and other innocents in harm's way in Iraq for no good reason.

We have found no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, established no ties to Sept. 11 and no links between Saddam Hussein's regime and al-Qaida - just caused a regime change that so far has left Iraq in chaos.

The virtually unilateral pre-emptive action that the United States took has accomplished nothing to deter terrorism around the world - at the cost of nearly 300 American lives, perhaps thousands of innocent Iraqi men, women and children and the alienation of much of the world community.

Yes, we must now figure out how to either "win the peace" or extricate ourselves from the madness in Iraq. But we should not forget that it was the stupidity, ineptitude and arrogance of Mr. Bush that put us in this situation.
