Ah, I had the name of the movie wrong. Thanks for straightening me out.

I thought that the way that woman extracted the pledge was just horrible. No amount of grief excuses that behavior. But it made an excellent premise for a movie. I thought Nicholson was super in the part and that the ending was especially well done, although unsatisfying.
