| Actually, an insult is a blow against reputation, but it also must be undeserved, or expressed inappropriately, to be considered wrong. Also, the person must understand the "violence" of the assault to be considered fully responsible. They may be blamed for being rude or unthinking or lacking a keen sense of humor, but to be fully blamed for the offense, they have to have meant it. Finally, it does not much matter how the party under attack takes it, in calculating the offense, although, as a practical matter, it may make a lot of difference, since the insult is in the assault on reputation, even if one can magnanimously shrug it off. |
