There's sort of a tough choice here. Given that the archive building was occupied by American troops for two weeks, during which two weeks it became abundantly clear that looting was a big problem, either something sinister happened or somebody in authority is a complete idiot. Of course, given the general cluelessness of the prewar predictions for how the occupation would go from the people promoting the war, complete idiocy can't be discounted, but I don't think sinister intent can be totally discounted either. I will boldly make one prediction, though. The administration flacks, both the official variety and the local amateur auxiliary, won't care to ponder this one at all closely.
