If he's smart politically, and my guess he's already getting overtures from Rove to smarten up politically, he'll move to a UN mandate and hope that nullifies the Iraqi issue in 04.


I don't think it would buy him anything. The people intoning "ommm Only the UN has legitimacy ommmmm" are all certified Bush haters, who would scream just as loud over what came next anyway. I don't think US vs UN control is a big issue with swing voters, and I have no evidence that the Iraqis give a damn for it. In fact, since the Iraqis have been experiencing the business end of the corrupt UN oil-for-food program for a while, I'd be highly suprised if they thought UN control would be an improvement. I haven't seen any evidence, and the UN boosters don't think any is needed; for them, UN "legitimacy" is an article of faith.
