Re: Is your home safe?
The fire is at least 25 miles away. I found out that the Internet is being put to good use on this fire:
bandbcomplex.com
I think it is impressive that the authorities could put this page together in just a few days. And 26,000 hits already.
Re: Did you go to Portland to see Howard Dean?
No. I have a couple friends who did. One was ecstatic at the turn-out.
It's interesting to compare the candidate's styles. Dean is my kind of stump speaker. Extemporaneous, articulate, a "give 'em hell, Harry" kind of guy.
Kerry gave a speech to the VFW National Convention in San Antonio today, and I was thinking I was looking at Calvin Coolidge. His dead-pan delivery off a prepared script was totally untelegenic on C-SPAN. But his words were excellent. Too bad he's got no panache.
Clark, the only other non-candidate who matters, is performing a masterful tease, IMHO. Much like Schwarzenegger's phony last minute decision to get into the California governor's race, Clark is building anticipation and excitement. His purportedly non-staff "draft Clark" people gave an excellent showing at the National Press Club today, and Clark just keeps getting TV appearances all over the channels for some reason. It's a bit creepy to think that his run is being so meticulously stage-managed by the men behind the curtain. Way too much like Bush for my taste in that regard. But at least Clark is qualified to be President, unlike Bush. It amazes me that Clark is playing his cards so close to the chest that no one even knows if he's a Democrat. Heck, he ought to challenge Bush in the Republican primaries and we could have a real contest between Dean and Clark in the 2004 elections. <g>
Re: Dean spoke about Bush and the money Ken Lay and Enron got.
That's a real sore subject for the voters of Portland. Their electric utility, Portland General Electric is still owned by Enron, and was used in the trading schemes that Enron used to corner the market a couple years ago. The rate payers got gouged by Enron and Ken Lay. |
