Roadside Bomb Kills U.S. Soldier in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. soldier was killed Tuesday after a support convoy was hit with a roadside bomb in the town of Hamariyah, the military announced, bringing the death toll since the end of major combat to one more than the number of soldiers who died during the war.

Two other soldiers were wounded in the blast, said U.S. Central Command spokesman Maj. Mike Escudie.

The incident brought the death toll since May 1, when President Bush (news - web sites) declared an end to major combat, to one more than the number of soldiers who died during heavy fighting before that date.

Since the war began on March 20, 277 U.S. forces have died. Since May 1, 66 soldiers have died in combat.
