Larry, while increasing capacity of existing transmission lines would be a winner, I don't think that the high-temp superconductors of AMSC fit that description. According to the Kenneth Chang article from the NYTimes that you posted on the other thread: "Superconductor cables will be buried underground and can be laid in the same corridors that existing transmission towers use."

In other words, superconductors cannot simply be strung up on existing towers, because the phase-to-phase, phase-to-ground and insulation of these towers is suitable only for what they already carry, but not for the much higher voltages of superconductors. And trenching to bury cable is about 10x more costly than above ground tower runs.
