No, that's exactly why I raised the question. Hamas was merely retaliating. Israel started the cycle of violence. Obviously, Sharon calculated these lost Jewish lives into his overall strategy. Were they worth the gains? Have there been any gains?

Back to the original question: Was it a smart tactical move by Sharon to breach the truce in Novemeber 2001? Similarly, was it a smart tactical move by Sharon to fire on unarmed protesters in September 2000 (that slaughter begat to the Intifada)?
