Sam, you give fund managers too much credit. The purchase by WDC of head making equipment is a very good fit. There are no negatives to it. A disk company that does not have expertise in making heads has a critical weakness. WDC strengthened its position significantly. It is exactly what they need at this time. A fund manager or analyst who doesn't see it this way should be fired.

The "assemble only" model of disk making is an artifact of Japanese kiritsu. Its OK for different Japanese corporations to make the different components, since they are just members of a cooperative group anyway. But now for Maxtor to be designing drives in the US, and depending on heads from Japan will be a big disadvantage relative to WDC.

And the results will speak for themselves.
