The British tried to keep "India" as one independent country. You are wrong that they wanted to divided it. It was the falling out of various nationalist factions that created the divide. In 1943 Jinnah and the Islam league -called- for partition.

When it was finally divided, all three factions bore responsibility.

Millions of people were displaced by the partition. And...

OVER ONE MILLION DIED! One Million!

during the forced move of hindus out of the "Islamic" (Pakistan) regions (one is now Bangladesh) and Moslems out of the new India nation. And Kashmir, whose ruler was a Moslem, was not allowed to join Pakistan, because so many of the subjects were Hindu. That problem, borne of partition, is ongoing.

One million died!
