Then your point is feeble. Metaphorically, people DO listen with their bellies. People often address their environment from unconscious (and poorly controlled) emotional motives rather than submitting their feeling to the cogency of reason. The metaphor of the belly speaks to the appetite and to the absence of reason. It speaks to the "unconscious" motive rather than to the thoughtful assesment. It contrasts raw instinct and unconscious need with the soaring power of intellectual engagement. I think it is a good metaphor, but I have no quarrel with you thinking otherwise. It is a free country.
