Cable vs. DSL

I figure I'd be better off asking my question here, rather than calling my phone company about DSL where, of course, they will glorify their product.

I'm on cable right now. I'm being hammered by "ping" alerts on my Zonealarm...in excess of 500 an hour. This has been going on for several weeks and I've just about had it. I don't even have to be logged onto the internet (I know that cable is always "on") to get the alerts. My cable modem's blinking green light hasn't blinked in weeks, has been solid green. It's sluggish, to say the least.

Depending on who I talk to at the Cable Company, it's either them running a test, or it's a customer trying to find an open port. So, to thank them for giving me a straight answer (not!), I keep sending them the alert logs. About 98% of the alerts lead right back to DNS numbers at my cable company. I figure if I pester them long and hard, they might actually look into the problem.

Okay...so to get to the point. I know that cable is a shared line, and DSL is a dedicated line. Right? Wrong?

If I'm right, it makes sense to me that on a dedicated line, the pings will stop because I'm the only one using it. I'm probably over simplifying this, so it would sure be great if I could get some opinions as to whether or not switching to DSL would solve this problem.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,
Siber
