The most serious threat we face is nukes in the hands of terrorists and rogue states. Saddam's nuke program was stopped dead in its tracks by inspectors after the gulf war. The destruction of third-world style weapons useful only in the immediate area around Iraq, and likely not even useful there as they would have deteriorated over the years, was not a serious threat to the United States. If WMDs were being destroyed late in the game it was more likely because they were useless and not worth having.
