My approach would be to find (struggling in the process, if need be) a resolution that satisfactorily resolves the key issues for the stakeholders.

I hate compromises. Would never suggest one if I thought there were a possibility of a consensus or if I didn't consider the matter serious.

In this case, the war framework might be apt. One way to end a war is to have a truce or a stalemate until enough time has passed where the issues are no longer thermonuclear. I don't see where winking for a generation is such a yucky alternative given that I haven't heard anything better.

I do not believe “innocuousness” does that.

I don't recall proposing innocuousness. I proposed both sides just do an attitude adjustment and agree to view the same thing different ways. Rather like that picture where some people see one figure and other people see another. They're both looking at the same thing. They both recognize that the other guy sees something different. And that's OK.
