I didn't answer because Solon jumped in with you and I didn't realize you wanted an answer particularly from me. As I recall, you asked if someone would explain... Or maybe that was a different question. Anyway, I didn't realize that my answer mattered to you.

If I take an oath, I am promising to tell the truth. And I am doing so under solemn circumstances. While I am naturally reluctant to lie, I do lie if it's kinder to do so or the truth would be inconvenient and the matter is of negligible importance. So, if I take an oath not to, I have my natural reticence about lying compounded by having to break the promise I just made not to compounded by my reverence for the seriousness of the situation. I find that quite sufficient to deter me from lying. I don't need Hell hanging over my head, too.

I got that from the way you stereotyped the non-believer in your example. Perhaps, instead, that was just your pique showing over my not responding earlier. .. <g>
