"While I am naturally reluctant to lie, I do lie if it's kinder to do so or the truth would be inconvenient and the matter is of negligible importance."

Most reasonable adults have experienced the disappointment of having someone they care about deceive them. It is normal, therefore, to take some steps to avoid that kind of disappointment or to cause it. However, the truth is very inconvenient in a setting where an opposing party intends to place you in harms way.

You don't go to court unless someone intents to take something of value from you that you don't intend to let go of. CH mentioned house home and children as the typical cost to be paid for losing a domestic case. These are the greatest Earthly assets anyone can put on the table. On top of that the other side is strategising to defeat any rational argument you can propose and to twist the evidence in their favour.

The question then is what value does telling the truth to some stranger in a robe have when the head of your daughter is on the chopping block, the home you have worked all your life to create is at stake, etc.

Of course people tell the truth when it is convenient...silly. Some people will not violate an oath even if their life, livelyhood, children, fortune, home, etc are at stake. You do not see a difference?
