Most such studies are marred by a lack of political comprehension on the part of the psychologist. For example, the Adorno study defines those on the right as authoritarian and proto- fascist, without discriminating between admirers of Mussolini, Father Coughlin, or Herbert Hoover. Thus, it not only confines itself to the fringe populist Right, rather than the broad mainstream of conservatism, but it sets up a circularity: of course you will find characteristics like simple- mindedness in people who swallow inadequately attested theories about Jews, for example. So I would like to see what sort of studies were used for this meta- study, and how carefully they dealt with some of the definitional and methodological problems. For example, where does the libertarian Right fit in? Aren't many on the hard Left just as "rigid" and "non- complex" as rightwingers?
