"You're preaching to the choir. You do it with such vehemence that I'm not always sure you realize that."

I am afraid you misunderstood my intent. I expected you to be in full agreement. It was an attempt to lay a common foundation for discussion. I do realize that I do that because it is useful. Otherwise we just banter and talk past each other with no common ground for thoughtful discourse and hopefully growth.

...simply because I care about doing the right thing and being the best person I can be. Don't see what's so mind boggling about that."

You seem like a very good, thoughtful, and considerate person, so; it is not that boggling in your case. I have met some despicable people who would state the same thing almost verbatum, simply because they know it is expected. They know they would not be able to engage others at all, if they didn't. Like saying, "I do" in court. It is empty rhetoric unless you can detect some integrity behind the statement....qualifier(s).

I suspect this is what good judges are trying to do. They get you to swear an oath and then listen to testimony. They swing their gavel with the one who seems most credible... and that is a "good" thing.
