Stentor To Test Wireless Cable Internet Access
By Paula Bernier 1:30 PM EDT
The Stentor Alliance, a consortium of Canada's 11 major telephone companies, plans to test high-speed Internet access using cable modems and a wireless Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System.
A launch date for the test has not be disclosed.
NextLevel Systems Inc.'s Satellite Data Networks Group and wireless cable transmitter vendor EMCEE Broadcast Products Inc. will provide the equipment for the test, which Telus Corp. will host on its downtown Edmonton, Alberta, network.
NextLevel's SURFboard modems and associated network equipment will deliver Internet access downstream over a standard 6-megahertz wireless television channel to subscribers' PCs at average rates of 1.5 megabits per second. Customers will use their existing analog modems and standard telephone line to send requests for information on the upstream path.
The Stentor Alliance includes BC Tel, Bell Canada, Island Tel, Manitoba Telecom Services, Maritime Tel & Tel, NBTel, NewTel Communications, NorthwesTel, QuebecTel, SaskTel and Telus.
