Japanese firm cutting jobs, moving manufacturing to China

August 28, 2003

Tokyo -- Japanese electronics maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Wednesday it plans to cut 1,100 jobs in Japan as it closes two domestic plants and relocates manufacturing of its electronic motor company to China.

Matsushita, the manufacturer of the Panasonic and National brands, announced the plans as part of a broader restructuring of its motor business.

Manufacturing and sales operations will increasingly be concentrated in China, while design, research and development, and product engineering will be conducted in Japan, a company news release said.
