"Nor have I evoked mundane personal interests, but rather matters of life and death, of momentousness to individuals and society."

You love your son probably more than any worldly entity outside of your yourself and your wife, which you may regard as one. You may even love your son as your self. You have not clarified your commitment to truth by saying simply that the momentousness of a situation provides an exception. If your son were being hunted by the police because you knew he had brutally raped, tortured, and killed eight nurses; I hope that you would not lie to protect him from coming to harm. To do so, would be a breach of trust with what you claim to believe in, your fidelity to humanity, and obligations to the noble goals of society.

So it does not boil down to exceptions based on momentousness such as a life and death situation.

There are no exceptions, there is only the suspension of qualifiers under certain conditions. We really should have different terminology to use when battling evil but unfortunately we do not.
